The curse of the speed river
Finding and restoring guelph's history
uncovering long lost artifacts in the speed river
In this series, we (my dog Pepper and I) search the Speed River in Guelph Ontario for artifacts from the city's past. The finds are incredible and absolutely fascinating - you can track a find from live footage in the river making discoveries, to identifying and dating the objects to a complete restoration using Elecrolytic Reduction and other processes. Many of the finds are related to Guelphs industrial history with several mills along the river operating from 1827 when Guelph was founded for about 100 years. They used the river as a power source, and garbage dump. In it's second season, this series is just getting started. The episodes are 1-3 minutes long - and you can binge the series on the "Curse of the Speed River" playlist at Steve Welch Ontario on YouTube. Finds so far include : An old axe, possibly that cut down the first tree in Guelph in 1827, a giant iron hinge from the old mill, Millwheel gears, a solenoid plunger, flag pole, cribbing spikes and all kinds of fasteners, blacksmith tools, and even an old knights templar cross carved into a rock that is also aligned with magnetic North!
